New Yorker Collects African Art Worth $10 Million Over Four Decades

Over 44 year Eric Edwards, a resident of Bedford-Stuyvesant, New York, has amassed a collection of African art he estimates to be worth $10 million.

“I have a few expensive pieces,” Edwards told Barcroft TV. “There is the palace strum from Nigeria, which is estimated to be worth about $1 million. It’s the only one like it in the world.”

“Creators of these art didn’t think of it as art as such as we do. It was created for utilitarian purposes. Whether that was for ceremonial, whether that was embodiments of symbolism or emblems of power.”

He now wants to create a museum of African culture in New York that will help the black community there learn about their history and the cultures of their roots in Africa.

“I think people will love it. I think It will draw a proper crowd especially with the proper advertisement. I think it will be something great to do,” said one Brooklyn resident, while other said it will be good to teach kids about their history.
