Anderson Defeats Mayer To Reach Wimbledon Fourth Round

Anderson Defeats Mayer To Reach Wimbledon Fourth Round

South Africa’s Kevin Anderson defeated Argentine Leonardo Mayer in the third round of Wimbledon on Friday afternoon, allowing him to progress to the fourth round and equal his best performance at the gram slam event.

The 2-metre tall Johannesburg born serve master won the match in straight sets 6-4, 7-6, 6-3.

The 28-year-old Argentine, who reached a best ever 22nd world ranking in May, struggled to deal with Anderson’s lethal service game, and lost the first set 6-4. In the second set the South African did well to save a set point at 5-4, before going on to take the set on a tie break 7-6.

That recovery provided momentum for Anderson, who went on to win the final set 6-3, with the overall scoreline making the match look far easier than it actually was. Mayer troubled his opponent throughout the encounter, especially in the first two sets, where Anderson had to call on his experience and produce some fine tennis to overcome Mayer.

The 29-year-old defeated Frenchman Lucas Pouille in the first round, before getting the better of Turkey’s Marsel Ilhan in the second round.

The 14th seeded South African is playing in his seventh Wimbledon tournament, with his previous best ever run coming in 2014 when he reached the fourth round. He will attempt to go one better by progressing past that stage in his next match.
