Aston Villa Closing In On Senegal’s Idrissa Gueye

Aston Villa have reportedly made an offer to entice Senegalese midfielder Idrissa Gueye away from French Ligue 1 club Lille.

The player is a major target for numerous English Premier League clubs, including the likes of West Ham United, Southampton and Crystal Palace, but a substantial offer from Villa may be enough to sway the player in their direction.

According to the Daily Mail, Aston Villa has made an offer of around $14 million to Lille, and the French club have accepted the fee, while other elements of the transfer continue to be negotiated.

Marseille seemed close to snatching the player up recently, but the effort forced other interested parties to up their game out of fear that they would lose out on his services to the French side.

The Senegalese midfielder is not a regular with his national team, but at Lille he has been a stalwart, with the 25-year-old contributing greatly in attack and defence from his spot in the middle of the park.

The latest developments seem to indicate that the player will not be remaining in France, but will instead be gracing Premier League pitches next season.

Idrissa was nominated alongside nine other footballers for the Marc Viviene Foe award, which recognises the best player from the continent based on their performances in the French Ligue 1 over the season.

The award is named after the Cameroonian midfielder who tragically died on the pitch during a FIFA Confederations Cup semi-final for the Indomitable Lions in June 2003.
