FIFA Corruption Scandal Includes South Africa’s 2010 World Cup

A sportswear company’s sponsorship deal with the Brazilian FA, the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the election of Sepp Blatter as FIFA president in 2011 are all part of the FBI’s corruption investigation.

US prosecutors allege a wide range of football matches and tournaments have been tainted by bribery and kickbacks including World Cup qualifiers, the Copa de Libertadores (South America’s equivalent of the Champions League) and the Copa America.

The bombshell announcements came on a dramatic day for football’s world governing body in Zurich.

Seven senior officials – including vice-president Jeffrey Webb – were arrested as FIFA gathered for its annual congress.

Swiss authorities detained the men on behalf US authorities who have charged them with being part of a £65million fraud campaign dating back three decades.

In a separate investigation, the Swiss prosecutor is investigating allegations of “criminal mismanagement and of money laundering in connection with the allocation of the 2018 and 2022 football World Cups”.
