Nigeria Coach Keshi: I Have No Problem With Mikel

Nigeria national team coach Stephen Keshi has snubbed talk of there being a rift between himself and Super Eagles veteran John Obi Mikel.

The rumour surfaced following Keshi’s squad announcement, which saw Chelsea’s Mikel not selected as part of the team that will take on Chad in next month’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

But the coach, who recently renewed his contract with the Super Eagles, has spoken out to dispel the talks of trouble between himself and the experienced midfielder.

“It’s true that I couldn’t reach him when he was injured but that’s not the reason for his omission,” Keshi said to BBC Sport. “We’ve spoken and contrary to reports there is no problem between us at all.”

The reports that Keshi referenced have appeared in the local media, with suggestions that the 28-year-old Mikel and his national team coach do not see eye to eye, but the former Mali and Togo tactician rubbished such talk, adding that the Chelsea player is an important player in the side.

“He’s an integral member of this team who brings a lot to it. Right now we are only giving opportunities to some new players,” he explained.

Refocusing on the upcoming qualifier, Keshi mentioned that he believes that his team will be able to return to the glory of 2013, when the Nigerians won the AFCON, and recover from a disappointing period where they failed to qualify for the 2015 edition and defend their title.

“We have a big task ahead to rebuild this team and I am confident we are going to bounce back. The door is not shut on anyone; those invited must show they deserve it by giving their best,” he concluded.
