SA’s Kevin Anderson Through To French Open Second Round

SA’s Kevin Anderson Through To French Open Second Round

South African tennis player Kevin Anderson progressed to the second round of the French Open on Tuesday afternoon after defeating American Tim Smyczek in straight sets in the men’s singles.

Anderson is the 15th seed at Roland Garros, and will be expected to move further into the competition based on his ranking and the way he has been playing to achieve that level, though he has typically struggled on clay in a way that he has not on other surfaces.

The 29-year-old who was born in Johannesburg was the favourite in this encounter, and he won the first set 6-4, relying on his height and excellent serve to give him the edge.

The second set was a fairly even affair, with both players remaining on serve in their matches until Anderson’s experience shone through and he took the set with another 6-4 scoreline.

By the third set it was clear that the South African was well on his way, and he confirmed that by winning the final set more convincingly, 6-2.

The final score was 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2 in favour of Anderson, who now moves on to a stiffer test in the second round.

The talented tennis star first achieved his career-high ranking of world no. 15 in January this year, and will be using this grand slam event to earn further moves up the ranking.
