Spirit Of Reconciliation: New Mandela Retreat Will Set You Back $6,000 A Night

From TheTelegraph. Story by Chris Leadbeater.

The Nelson Mandela Centre for Reconciliation, located on a game reserve north of Johannesburg, will be available from £3,800 per night.

That’s 70,000 rand or $5946.19 US.

A private residence built for Nelson Mandela is opening to the public as a luxury retreat where guests can walk in the footsteps of one of the most iconic figures of recent history — and maybe sleep where he slept and eat at his table.

The Nelson Mandela Centre for Reconciliation was built for the former South African president after his retirement from political life in 1999, and opened in 2001.

Located on the Shambala Private Game Reserve, around 160 miles (257.5 kilometers) north of Johannesburg, the complex was designed as a hideaway in the South African bushveld where Mandela could rest. It was also a place to meet dignitaries and friends.

It had been closed since his death in December 2013 but will now be available to rent, with prices starting at 70,000 South African Rand per night.

While this might seem expensive, the property can sleep up to 12 people in five master bedrooms, plus a vast presidential suite equipped with his-and-hers dressing rooms.

The complex also encompasses various lounges, dining areas and verandas. The per-night price includes all meals prepared by a private chef, and butler service. Guided bush walks and game drives on the adjacent reserve can be arranged.

The opening of the centre as a high-end retreat supplies an extra location for the many travelers who visit South Africa in search of Mandela’s fascinating life story.

Mandela spent time at the Centre for Reconciliation after stepping out of public life in 2004 amid growing frailty and ill health.

Guests will be able to relax in similar fashion, making use of a swimming pool that overlooks a watering hole.
