MLS Top Scorer Obafemi Martins Scores Brace For Sounders

Nigerian Obafemi Martins was once again on target this weekend with a brace as the Seattle Sounders defeated New York FC 3-1 in Major League Soccer (MLS) action.

The 30-year-old former Newcastle United, Levante and Inter Milan player has been in excellent form for his US club from Washington, using his fiery pace and impressive skill to top the MLS scoring charts with six goals from seven games, as well as two assists.

His strike partnership with US international Clint Dempsey has been very successful, and both players were on the score sheet once again on Sunday in the Bronx.

Martins scored in the 23rd minute of the match to open the scoring with a characteristic run towards goal before a clinical finish, but New York responded with a Mehdi Ballouchy equaliser.

Dempsey restored the lead for the Sounders in the 58th minute, before the Yankee Stadium fell silent with another excellent finish in Martins’ second goal from a Marco Pappa assist on 67 minutes.

Martins seems on track to better last season’s stats of 17 MLS goals from 31 matches if his current form is a barometer.

With 18 goals for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in 39 appearances, Martins has a prolific scoring record for the national team, but has fallen out of favour with coach Stephen Keshi is recent years.

He represented Nigeria at the 2006, 2008 and 2010 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, as well as the 2010 World Cup.
