Abengoa, the Seville, Spain-based energy and environment company, has inaugurated the first desalination plant in Ghana — a first for the West Africa region as a whole.

The plant, which has already been treating water for the last two months, is able to supply 60,000 cubic meters of fresh water, sufficient for 500,000 residents within the vicinity of Accra and the surrounding areas.

The desalinated water is being sold to Ghana Water Co. Ltd. under a 25-year build-own-operate-transfer model for distribution to households and businesses. The project is expected to create 400 jobs.

Abengoa’s desalination plants can be found in Algeria, U.S., Spain, China, Chile, and India among others. More than 230 million people worldwide depend on desalinated water daily.
