At least three people have died and a Somali shopkeeper is in critical condition related to xenophobic attacks in the port city of Durban, Business Day reports.

South African police have arrested 17 people with murder charges pending after attacks on foreign nationals in Durban, BBC reports.

The violence follows comments by Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini, who allegedly called for migrants to go home. The king  said he was mistranslated.

Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba asked traditional leaders to stop making remarks that “could result in a loss of life,” according to BBC.

At least 62 people died in xenophobic attacks in South Africa in 2008.

More than 250 foreigners have been attacked, mostly from the Democratic Republic of Congo, BBC reports. Foreign-owned shops have been looted in the port city of Durban.

More than 1,000 African migrants have fled their homes, some going to police stations and other are being housed in tents on a sports field.

The police do not know exactly how many people have died, but the dead include South African nationals as well as foreigners, police spokesperson Maj. Thulani Zwane told BBC.
