The African Union’s New Partnership for Africa’s Development (Nepad) Agency plans to add as much as 14,000 megawatts to Africa’s energy grid by 2020 through its Programme for Infrastructure Development.

While some projects are underway, Nepad is still looking for investors to raise $68 billion in order to meet this deadline.

The initiative has 15 priority energy projects including hydroelectric power and transnational oil and gas pipelines that will improve energy penetration across the continent.

“If we talk about the 15 high priority mega projects we are estimating about 13,000 to 14,000 megawatts to added to the network by 2020 if all the projects are implemented,” Nepad Agency energy division head Professor Mosad Elmissiry told Bloomberg TV.

“The region will have its needs for gas met first and then the rest will be exported to Europe,” he added.

The 15 projects included power generation schemes, such as the Inga 3 hydropower project in the Democratic Republic of Congo, several cross-border transmission corridors and oil pipelines.
