Steven Pienaar Returns To Training For Everton

South African midfielder Steven Pienaar is returning to Everton training this week, following a long standing injury that has kept him out of club action for the last three months.

The injury to his knee means that the former South African captain has not played for the Merseyside outfit since December.

Probably as a result of his age, the 33-year-old has taken more time than expected to recover from the injury, but after a great deal of hard work Pienaar is ready to return to training with his Everton team-mates.

Club coach Roberto Martinez is excited about the player’s return to the squad, and expects to welcome him back to training this week.

“We had very good news on Steven. He’s going to join the group on Monday [today] and we’ll take it from that point on, making sure that slowly but surely we give him the right path to being fully fit and being able to enjoy his football again,” Martinez told the Everton official website.

The former Ajax Amsterdam midfielder has only managed 10 appearances for the Toffees this season, and Martinez is keen to have him back in contention for a first team place.

“We’ve missed Steven massively throughout this season and it’s important we’ll be able to see him on a football pitch before the season ends,” he added.

Now that Pienaar is returning to training, it will allow him to build his fitness in the coming weeks before finding some consistent game time in the English Premier League and proving himself once again.
