U20 World Cup Draw Reveals Africa’s Opponents

On Monday the four Under-20 sides that will represent Africa at the 2015 FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand later this year were enlightened regarding the groups that they will find themselves in during the junior tournament.

The four sides involved were Ghana, Mali, Senegal and eventual U20 African champions Nigeria.

The four junior national teams qualified for the competition by reaching the semi-finals of the African Youth Championships, which concluded on Sunday with the victory of the Nigerian Flying Eagles by 1-0 against the Senegalese youngsters.

Once they became victorious in the 2015 AYC, the Nigerians knew that they would be placed in Group E alongside Brazil, Korea and Hungary. The other three African sides only knew their fate following the draw, which took place in Dakar, Senegal.

The Black Satellites of Ghana found themselves in Group B, which also includes Argentina, Panama and Austria. Senegal were drawn in Group C, and they will face Portugal, Colombia and Qatar for a chance to progress to the knockout stages.

Finally, Mali’s draw saw them placed alongside Mexico, Uruguay and Serbia.

Africa’s best junior sides will represent the continent at the U20 World Cup in New Zealand from May 30 to June 20.

These are the six groups that football fans can look forward to seeing in action later in the year at the Under-20 FIFA World Cup:

Group A – Myanmar, New Zealand, Ukraine, USA

Group B – Argentina, Panama, Ghana, Austria

Group C – Qatar, Colombia, Portugal, Senegal

Group D – Mexico, Mali, Uruguay, Serbia

Group E – Nigeria, Brazil, Korea DPR, Hungary

Group F – Fiji, Germany, Honduras, Uzbekistan
