NFF Denies Reports Of Meeting With Stephen Keshi Over Super Eagles Job

In a saga that continues to hang over Nigerian football, the national team is still effectively without a coach to take them forward, and reports on the potential for Stephen Keshi to remain as the Super Eagles boss are mixed.

Reports suggested that the former Mali and Togo coach was due to meet with members of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) again on Tuesday, but this has now been denied by the federation’s technical chairman, Felix Anyansi Agwu.

According to SuperSport, Agwu said, “It is not true. I saw the reports on the pages of some newspapers and I was saddened because they are untrue. They should stop insinuating and have their facts right.”

Agwu added that any contract offered to the former national team captain would not contain publicly available information, as such an agreement between Keshi and the NFF, which the coach has previously referred to as a slave contract, would be a private document.

“A contract is not supposed to be for public consumption. Both parties are discussing about the details of the contract and cannot tell Nigerians what and what have been discussed. Nigerians should wait until the contract is signed or not signed. When negotiations about personal terms of a contract are discussed, it is not supposed to be discussed on television, radio or the pages of newspapers,” the chairman added.

He went on to defend the way in which the NFF is dealing with the negotiations and further criticised the local media for reporting information that is not verified, asking for fans to have patience so that the situation can be addressed and a coach acquired.

“People should stop putting words into my mouth or the federation. We (NFF) are following due process. Nigerians should be patient. We want to take our time to see that we make the best decisions for this country,” he concluded.

The Super Eagles will be keen to sort out these coaching issues urgently, as there are important qualification campaigns beginning in the near future, including matches for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and 2018 World Cup in June and October respectively.
