Cote D’Ivoire Star Gervinho Warns That The AFCON Title Is Not Yet Won

Cote D’Ivoire cruised past DR Congo on Wednesday’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final with a 3-1 victory booking them a shot at the AFCON title in the final of the tournament, which is to be played on Sunday.

Ghana will be the opponents who are standing between the Elephants and the title of African champions, and Ivorian talent Gervinho is well aware that the crown is not yet theirs.

Speaking to SuperSport.com, the Roma striker made his feelings clear. “We are happy that we are in the final but the job that needs to be done is accomplishing the mission which you and I know very well,” he said.

Cote D’Ivoire has disappointed at the last few AFCON competitions, often beginning the tournament as favourites before crashing out, or in the case of the 2012 edition, losing on penalties to Zambia in the final.

Gervinho believes that a win on Sunday against the Black Stars would go some way to making up for those disappointments.

“It would be a reward for this generation of players and the supporters who have stood by us all these years of near misses,” he added.

Ghana defeated hosts Equatorial Guinea 3-0 on Thursday night, and they will be keen to put in their best performance in what is expected to be an excellent Nations Cup final.
