Cote D’Ivoire Coach Renard Unimpressed Following AFCON Semi-Final Victory

Cote D’Ivoire coach Herve Renard was not overly impressed with his side’s 3-1 victory over DR Congo in Wednesday’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final.

Goals from Yaya Toure, Wilfried Kanon and Gervinho cancelled out a penalty from DRC’s Dieumerci Mbokani to put The Elephants into the final of the Nations Cup, which will take place on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference following the win, the French coach showed a lack of enthusiasm for his squad’s performance on the night.

“People are happy about the result which is a good thing but personally I didn’t like the match. My players didn’t impress me today,” Renard revealed to the media.

“We were too easy, perhaps due to some fatigue after the previous games. We could have done better. We had the potential to pull off a better result than what we did today,” he added.

DR Congo and Cote D’Ivoire traded blows in qualifying for the tournament, with a 2-1 victory for the Ivorians in Kinshasa followed by a 4-3 loss for Renard’s men in Abidjan. The coach acknowledged the strengths of his side’s opponents.

“We have faced each other several times, and I knew it was going to be a difficult match. DR Congo are good at cutting in from the flanks and it was hard for me to get my players adapted to that style. However, we were able to realise the most important thing which is the qualification to the final,” he said.

Manchester City star Yaya Toure got the ball rolling for The Elephants with a great strike from outside the box. Renard complimented the midfielder for his work ethic and the impact he has in the side.

“You see what Yaya Toure did today. He is doing a huge work for the team. He has been sacrificing a lot. People should stop saying he plays better at Manchester City than with the Ivorian national team,” the Frenchman added.

On Thursday night the Ivorians will find out who they will face in the final of the AFCON on Sunday, as Ghana take on host nation Equatorial Guinea for a spot in the title match.
