New African Jobs App A First For Continent, Owners Say

Two South African companies have launched SkillsMap, an online employee recruitment app that they say is the first of its kind in Africa to focus on the entire continent as well as the Middle East, Europe and the U.K., according to a report in Business Day Live.

Partnering to create the app are technology firm Business Connexion, which is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and specialist recruitment company Conscript Africa.

Business Connexion integrates business solutions based on information and communications technology with offices in Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania and Zambia.

SkillsMap will cater to most industries with a focus on jobs related to financial services, engineering, information technology, telecommunications, sales and marketing, fast-moving consumer goods, engineering, mining, manufacturing and human resources, the report says.

Companies can post vacancies and job seekers can apply for positions using the app.

The app allows companies to access the SkillsMap talent community portal, an applicant tracking system and a customized client career portal.

Job seekers get a free SkillsMap subscription but companies have to pay.

The company wants to sign up between one million and 1.5-million users in its first two years, said SkillsMap CEO Heidi Duvenage in the Business Day Live report.

“The app specifically targets premium skills and even candidates who are not necessarily on the market at the time,” she said. “This includes anyone from graduates to top executives who are looking to grow their career, develop their talents or make a career move.”
