Russian researchers have developed an Ebola vaccine that will first undergo testing on animals before human clinical trials begin in Africa, according to an ItarTASS video.

Scientists at the St. Petersburg-based Research Institute of Influenza developed the vaccine. Trials are due to be completed in Africa in February.

“The candidate vaccine against Ebola created by a group of young scientists of our institute is undergoing tests for genetic stability,” said Oleg Kiselev, director of the Research Institute of Influenza, according to the video.

Clinical tests involving volunteers will be conducted in Africa, Russian news agency Itar-TASS reported. All the stages of trials are due to wrap up in February, Kiselev said.

This month, researchers from the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the U.S. reported that the first trial of an experimental Ebola vaccine in an African population showed it is safe for use, according to CIDRAP.

Phase 1 studies are also under way for a Canadian-developed Ebola vaccine, according to CIDRAP.

Researchers in China have also developed a vaccine to combat the spread of Ebola and will test the drug on humans, IBNLive reports.

The total number of Ebola deaths was 7, 857 as of Dec. 27, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Total Ebola cases was 20,115, with 12,850 laboratory-confirmed cases.
