What Is Microsoft South Africa’s Take On The Future Of Social Media?

Drive on any Johannesburg highway and you’ll see signs of traditional media everywhere — billboards every few meters advertising local restaurants and the sides of 10-story buildings lit up with ads promoting telecoms or Coca-Cola.

But businesses are re-allocating their budgets away from traditional methods of advertising toward social media, and they’ll continue doing so, says Farren Roper. Roper is chief marketing officer for Microsoft South Africa. He spoke about the future of social media at Social Media Week Johannesburg.

Sharing the stage with Roper was Uriel Rootshtain, business leader of diversity for Microsoft, South Africa. He talked about trends in digital work lives.

“Enterprise social is fast being incorporated into businesses,” Rootshtain said. “People want to interact in a social way but companies don’t want to give away their secrets.”

Roper and Rootshtain spoke to AFKInsider at Social Media Week Johannesburg.
