A South African domestic worker who landed a spot in the popular ‘Master Chef’ TV series is causing a stir in a country where household staff are usually seen but not heard.
Siphokazi Mdlankomo, a 39-year-old based in Cape Town, debuted to rave reviews on the show, with viewers happy to see a domestic worker in the limelight.
“Sipho just keeps on showing us that attitude is everything! That short little woman is stealing our hearts!” said Matt Warr, a 27-year-old teacher living in Pietermaritzburg on Twitter.
Yet Ms Mdlankomo’s story has also struck a nerve in South Africa, where the average domestic worker’s life is anything but a fairy tale. The monthly wage for a domestic worker is about £90, and there are many reports of workers being exploited and abused.
So powerful is the image of the domestic worker in South Africa that legislators from the Left-leaning party, the Economic Freedom Fighters, wear their uniform – knee-length dresses with aprons – to parliament, a symbol of solidarity with the working class.
