Outsourced To Rwanda: Chinese Garments Destined For U.S.

Chinese-owned C&H Garments has agreed to spend $10 million in Rwanda over the next five years manufacturing garments for export to Europe and the U.S., VenturesAfrica reports.

The investment will boost the local manufacturing sector and create jobs for Rwandans, said Clare Akamanzi, chief operations officer of the Rwanda Development Board.

Helen Hai, co-owner of C&H Garments, said the company got massive support from the Rwanda Development Board in its plans to start operating in
the East African country. The company will ship manufacturing equipment from China and will hire 200 workers in September 2014.

“C&H Garments is very pleased to be starting a new manufacturing unit in the Kigali Special Economic Zone,” Hai said. “We believe that Rwanda can offer a strong and disciplined workforce that will ensure we develop a successful business.”

Hai said the company plans to create more than 30,000 jobs in the Rwandan garment industry and hopes to bring in more than $1 billion to the country. It also plans to export garments to Europe and the US.

“Rwanda has created an investment climate that attracts foreign investors who always want safe destinations for their capital,” Akamanzi said.

Rwanda reported a 7.4-percent gross domestic product growth in the first quarter of 2014. The government’s strategy for growing the economy is through private investment, VenturesAfrica reports.

Rwanda is one of the easiest places in the world to do business, according to the World Bank’s Ease Of Doing Business index. It ranked ninth out of 183 countries globally in ease of starting a business, according to an earlier AFKInsider report.
