Unemployed youth pose a major development and security challenge to Mali in the foreseeable future and hence a project that would boost employment opportunities, said Paul Noumba, World Bank Country Director for Mali. For this reason, Noumba said, the bank had approved $63 million to support education and training programs to improve the work prospects for Mali’s young people.

He said the project will contribute to reducing the proportion of out of school, unemployed and disenfranchised youth which has increased as a result of the disruption of the education system, and the worsening economic climate since 2012.

According to the World Bank, about 70 percent of the country’s youth between the ages of 15 and 24 have left school and do not have sufficient qualifications and skills to enter the workforce.
