Africa Gets Its First Female Dreamliner Captain

Captain Irene Koki Mutungi  has become Africa’s first female Dreamliner  captain after she was promoted to fly the world’s latest plane, the Boeing B787 Dreamliner at the Kenya Airways where she was also the first female to become a captain.

Captain Mutungi was the first ever and only female pilot at Kenya Airways for about six years – more ladies have since joined the airline in the cockpits of their various planes – and has risen steadily through the ranks.

“From a very young age I was exposed to flying. My dad was a pilot with Kenya Airways and from about the age of two we would fly with him and he would let us come to the cockpit occasionally… from way back then I developed the interest and knew that I wanted to fly,” Mutungi told KTN in an interview.
