Liquid Telecom, which built Africa’s largest fiber network running from Northern Uganda to Cape Town, announced today it has acquired the assets of Rwandatel, Rwanda’s fixed line network operator.

The deal includes Rwandatel’s copper and fiber network and its customer base but excludes most of the land, which remains the property of Rwandatel, according to a report in African Business Review.

Headquartered in Mauritius, Liquid Telecom is the leading wholesale carrier in Africa, the report says. An award-winning Pan-African fiber network according to its website, it  stretches more than 8,000 miles across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho and South Africa.

It is the first network to cross country borders and covers Africa’s fastest-growing economies where no fixed network has existed before.

The acquisition comes four months after Liquid Telecom bought the East African assets of The Altech Group including a controlling interest in Kenya Data Networks.

Rwandan customers will have continued service, new products and improvements, the report said.
