Leila Lopes

This Angolan beauty won Miss Universe in 2011. During the year of the title, she was a business student and now is dedicating time to working on her platform of fighting HIV/AIDS and poverty.

Mpule Kwelagobe

Miss Botswana, Mpule Kwelagobe won Miss Universe in 1998. She was the first black African to win the Miss Universe title, and the third black woman to win it. Kwelagobe was crowned by former Miss Universe winner, Wendy Fitzwilliam. Today, she is a human rights health activist who works to help youth and women get better access to reproductive services and sex education.

Wendy Fitzwilliam

The Trinidad and Tobago native won Miss Universe in 1998. She was the second black woman to win the title. Since winning, Fitzwilliam has recorded a jazz demo and has passed the bar exam to work in the field of law.

Janelle Commissiong

The Trinidad resident was the very first woman of African descent as well as the first black woman to win the Miss Universe title. She was crowned in 1977. While she held the title, Commissiong was an advocate for black rights and world peace.

Marjorie Vincent
