Gemstone Companies Fail to Put Licenses to Use in Zambia

Government has observed that less than 10 companies in the gemstone sector are operational despite issuing in excess of 400 mining licences.

Mines, Energy and Water Development Deputy Minister Richard Musukwa said the Government had issued more than 400 mining licences in the gemstone industry, but that it was saddened to learn that less than 10 companies were now operating.

Speaking at the first emerald summit in Lusaka yesterday, Mr Musukwa said a lot of the licence holders had had huge challenges ranging from production, processing and marketing.

“We are saddened as Government that less than 10 gemstone mines are operating despite issuing in excess of 400 licences due to a number of challenges,” he said.
