World Travel Awards Picks Kenya for 20th Gala

Nominations have been announced for the 20th Annual Travel Awards Africa gala ceremony, scheduled for October in Kenya to honor leading travel, tourism and hospitality companies from 31 African countries.

The location was chosen after a successful and peaceful general election was held in Kenya  in March, according to an article in Breaking Travel News.

Online voting has begun ahead of the ceremony. To see nominees or to vote, go to World Travel Awards.

Awards will be given to 117 companies, organisations and destinations in different categories including Africa’s leading low-cost airline, spa resort, destination, boutique hotel brand, golf resort, business hotel, green hotel, safari lodge and beach destination.

Some examples of nominees include Rwanda’s leading hotel: Hotel des Mille Collines; Kigali Serena Hotel and The Manor Hotel Kigali.

Nominees for Africa’s leading beach destinations inlcude Bazaruto, Mozambique; Cape Town, South Africa; Diani Beach, Kenya; Plettenberg Bay, South Africa and Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt.

Nominees for Africa’s leading green hotel include Il Ngwesi Eco Lodge, Kenya: Karlkloof Spa & Lodge, South Africa; Manda Nkwichi Lodge, Mozambique; Nairobi Serena Hotel, Kenya; The Aberdale Country Club, Kenya and The Phantom Forest Eco-Reserve, South Africa.

“World Travel Awards is coming to Kenya at the right time,” said Kenya Travel Board managing director Muriithi Ndegwa. “This has further raised the country’s profile as a safe destination. That World Travel Awards has chosen Kenya for the African region ceremony as part of the world grand tour is an endorsement of the country as a preferred tourism destination in the world.”

The event will be held Oct. 15 in Nairobi.
