Assignment countries of the East African Community Common Market Scorecard project include Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda. In a newer progress measurement effort, countries will be examined and graded on their ability to lessen trade barriers, according to NTV Kenya. Aspects of a passing grade are attached to tariff issues and the country’s performance in solving them.

“EAC Common Market Scorecard is a contribution towards ensuring that the commitments that the partner states have made are respected in actual fact. What we have done in partnership with the EAC secretariat and five EAC partner states, we have undertaken an analysis of laws and regulation within the common market that are inconsistent to the commitment that these countries have made,” a lead author told NTV Kenya.

The Scorecard project’s ultimate focus is to direct attention to progressive and “bottleneck” countries to accelerate the market, the author added.
