South Africa Platinum Strikers Turn Down Wage Offer

South Africa Platinum Strikers Turn Down Wage Offer

By 2015, category four mine workers could receive monthly wages of around $936,Africa reported. The wage hikes would increase in increments over the next three years, however, members of the Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union (AMCU) are not please with the offer. Strikers are pushing for an immediate raise which will land wages at $1,106 per month.

“The strike will end after we’ve agreed with the companies and the employees are satisfied, maybe, with the offer — as the union will look into that offer (a new offer for management) and discuss,” Ruben Lesejane, an Association of Mineworkers & Construction Union member said.

“There’s nothing that you can take a decision on until you come back to our members and report it so they can give us a mandate to agree or not.”

The strike began Thursday, January 23 and is expected to continue as more unions join in to demand higher pay. A Bloomberg report notes that the platinum industry is losing $18 million per day.
