Rand Tumbles, South Africa’s Platinum Miners Report For Work Friday Despite Call For More Strikes

From Reuters Canada.

Platinum mine workers’ unions and committees threatened to call a strike Friday over looming job cuts but South Africa’s miners at Anglo American Platinum mines reported for work, according to Reuters.

Mine workers went on strike earlier this week over Amplat’s announcement that it would cut 6,000 jobs to increase profitability.

The renewed threats sent the company’s shares to an eight-year low of 286 rand (about $30.31 Thursday), about half this year’s high of 508.99 rand in January, according to Reuters.

Earlier this week, the rand sank to its lowest since April 2009 due to concerns the labor unrest might spread through the rest of the mining sector.
