Development Goals, Who Needs Them? Young People Around Africa Want Jobs

Getting a job and a good education ranked first and second priorities ahead of concerns around food in a survey of young people in Africa.

Andy Wales, senior vice president of sustainable development for SABMiller, talked about the results of the survey, a research project by international grassroots advocacy group  ONE Campaign, at the recent Africa Economic Summit in Cape Town.

Job creation is in king in Africa, just like everywhere else, Wales said.

ONE Campaign asked young people in South Africa, Zambia and other parts of Africa what they wanted as part of the debate on post-2015 goals, which the U.N. will set itself when the existing Millennium Development Goals expire in 2015, according to the report.

Wales said in a blog for Huffington Post that the summit audience seemed divided over whether these new goals should include an emphasis on economic growth and job creation or if it would be more powerful to only target social development outcomes such as human rights improvements.

SABMiller has brewing and beverage operations around the world including 15 African countries and has strategic alliances in another 21.
