Rand Sinks To Three Week Low Against Dollar Over Mining Strike Fears

Striking mine workers halted production at the world’s third-largest platinum mining company for a second day Wednesday in South Africa, dragging down the value of the rand against the dollar to a three-week low.

The Lonmin strikes stoked fears that this could become a repeat of the industrial unrest in August when 34 miners were killed by police in one day.

The rand weakened to 9.2540 to the dollar, its softest since April 23, according to the report.

“This has reminded investors that the currency remains vulnerable to portfolio flows,” said Christopher Shiells, emerging market analyst at Informa Global Markets.
