With a dearth of agriculture extension officers in Ghana, mobile phones are scheduled to be  given to farmers in some northern parts of the country in June to disseminate agricultural  information using common languages many understand.

The new technology is being funded by World Bank and implemented by the West Africa Agricultural Productivity Program, a 13-country program which was started in 2007. The second phase started in 2012 and ends in 2017 at a total cost of $60 million as a loan to Ghana, according to Myjoyonline.

Standard smart mobile phones will allow agricultural ideas to be transmitted, captured, stored and retrieved by farmers, according to Emmanuel Alorigiya, program communication officer.

“There are very few agriculture extension officers in the country and this is the best way to educate farmers,” Alorigiya said.
