South African Tourism Department Wants Budget Resort Chain To Make Travel Accessible To ‘Ordinary South Africans’

The South African Department of Tourism hopes to bolster job creation and alleviate poverty by developing underused state assets and properties into tourist attractions and facilities.

It has commissioned a feasibility study for a pilot budget resort chain with the goal of making domestic tourism more accessible to ordinary South Africans, according to a report in Business Day Live.

Partnerships would be sought to “derisk” the venture, Tourism Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said Tuesday in parliament.

“The time has come to remove the final barriers to fully unlock our country’s tourism treasures and the intrinsic value of travel for all South Africans,” he said.

The 3.4-million foreign visitors to South Africa in 1993 grew by 300 percent to 13.5-million visitors in 2013. Of those, about 70 percent were tourists.
