Namibia To Export Cattle, Angola Eager To Get It

Namibia To Export Cattle, Angola Eager To Get It

Namibia, which already has a well-established cattle export agreement with South Africa, has begun to export cattle to Angola. Although the trade agreement between Namibia and Angola has yet to be finalized, the first 100 cows were loaded up for the trip to Angola last weekend, said a report in All Africa.

“This first consignment of Namibian cattle must be seen as a symbolic gesture of big things to come,” said Jose Oliveira, founder of the Namibian/Angolan Housing Institution.

The plan is to export both cattle and processed meat to Angola, said Governor of the Omaheke Region, Festus Ueitele. Angola has a great need for both.

Farmers’ consortiums from the Cuando Cubango region in Angola have expressed huge interest in buying Namibian cattle and processed meat products, and abattoirs – the Gobabis Abattoir and the Witvlei Meat Abattoir – have been approached to process animals in accordance with the needs of Angolan importers.

“We are hammering out the details of a sustainable, long-term export trade that will be in the best interest of both countries,” Oliviera said. “Much hard work has gone into this agreement, and it carries the full back-up of the Angolan government….I cannot disclose figures at this stage, but I can tell you we are talking of mega bucks,” he said.”

Local cattle farmers have been alerted to prepare for the agreement. In spite of the recent drought, many farmers planned in advance and their cattle are in good shape, Ueitele said.

Ueitele is pushing for the trade agreement to be put into action before the end of the year. Once it’s official, it’s likely to be an extremely profitable venture for Namibia, while supplying Angola with the cattle and products it desires at fair prices, All Africa reports.
