Permanent Egyptian Government to be Established by Spring 2014

By spring of 2014, citizens in Egypt are promised to be on a better path to fairness, democracy and government order as the interim government period is expected to end, Reuters reported.

A new political roadmap that better outlines equal opportunities and progression for all people is being drafted to amend the constitution which was supported and created largely by ousted president Mohammed Morsi’s Islamist assembly, the report said.

“Work is under way, in line with the roadmap, on several tracks. It has so far succeeded in establishing the principles of justice, freedom and democracy, as a basis for governance,” Egyptian foreign minister Nabil Fahmy said in the report. “This will be followed by parliamentary elections, then presidential elections, so that the transitional phase ends by next spring.”

Fahmy also said that all Egyptians — who are for democracy and opposed to violence — are welcome to participate in the country’s progressive political process and influence changes to the roadmap.

“We are determined to fully implement the roadmap. This requires us to give the utmost priority to the preservation of security and the enforcement of the law, and to counter any intimidation attempts aiming at hindering our efforts,” Fahmy continued.

According to Reuters more than 1,000 Egyptians have been killed as a result of  security forces invading Morsi supporter camps on August 14. Though the Muslim Brotherhood has already been banned, the new government is taking measures to shut down those attached to groups which incite violence.

The worst violence experienced in modern-day Egypt, Reuters reported, the country is still operating under an emergency law that enforces curfew.

Moving forward, Fahmy suggested that citizens will no longer have to worry about a repeat of Morsi’s ousting — or subsequent events — as Egyptians promoting peace will never again be left out of the political process.
