The executive secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), has called at the 11th Conference of Parties (CoP 11) to the UNCCD on international organizations and the business community to provide support to Namibia in addressing the severe drought the country currently face.

Luc Gnacadja said Namibia is facing severe drought in its northern parts, adding that Namibia’s effort to develop a strong national drought risk management policy is a good step in a right direction.

The conference started on Monday in the capital and will run until the 27th of this month. Gnacadja said support to Namibia will enable the country to move beyond crisis management, and adopt strong preparedness and risk management strategies which will help the nation’s resilience to drought in the future.

Environment and Tourism Minister, Uahekua Herunga, said a healthy and productive land is the fundamental basis for humanity’s long-term food, water and energy security, and a necessary pre-condition for socio-economic development.
