Online shopping is a growing trend on the continent, with numerous African e-commerce companies providing local and international buyers with a way to give gifts to friends, family and loved ones, as well as spoiling themselves.

From South Africa to Nigeria, and many places in between, e-commerce is experiencing a growth phase, and consumers are appreciating the convenience of transacting online when buying products.

Whether purchasing gifts for birthdays or other special occasions such as Christmas or to celebrate a personal milestone, online shopping sites are making the most of growing internet penetration in Africa.

Takealot

South Africa’s largest and most popular e-commerce retailer, the customer-focused online site joined the Naspers group in 2015. At the beginning of 2015 Takealot merged with local competitor Kalahari.com to form a bigger online retailer. Naspers recently purchased more stake in the site for around $73.4 million.

Jumia is one of Africa’s largest online shops for fashion, electronics, appliances and more, delivering purchases made online to the homes or offices of customers. Based in Nigeria, the e-commerce site is also available in Ghana, Egypt, Morocco, Kenya and Ivory Coast.

The biggest online retailer in Egypt, Souq is a Dubai-based online retailer in which Naspers owns a significant stake. The business is known as the Amazon.com of the Middle East, and is estimated to be worth around $1.2 billion.
