Nigeria’s Wilfred Ndidi Wins Belgian Goal Of The Year Award

New Leicester City signing Wilfred Ndidi of Nigeria was presented this week with the Belgian Goal of the Year award for a stunning strike that he scored last year while representing his former club Genk.

The midfielder scored the long-range effort in a Belgian top-flight match against rivals Club Brugge while playing for Genk in the 2015-16 season, before he left the club for the English Premier League in January this year.

Using superb technique and displaying a great deal of determination to score, Ndidi won the ball before a deft touch lifted the ball past a defender that was threatening his opportunity to attack the Club Brugge goal.

After lifting the ball over the play and moving with pace toward his target, he hit the ball cleanly and powerfully with a well-timed volley that swerved deceptively and nestled in the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance to save the strike.

Current English champions Leicester City completed the signing of the Nigerian midfielder from Genk for a fee of $18 million, which will see him remain at the Foxes for five and a half years.

The Nigerian midfielder is as versatile as they come, and this dynamic quality has attracted the interest of numerous clubs, while his ability to score goals such as the one above certainly helps his case.

The club have struggled to replace N’golo Kante as the midfield enforcer since the Frenchman joined Chelsea in the off-season, and Ndidi was brought in to fill that void and contribute to Leicester’s season.

The 20-year-old is available for all competitions, and has added versatility and youth to the midfield at the King Power Stadium. The midfielder wears the number 25 shirt at the Foxes, which is the same number he used at Genk.

Ndidi has represented Nigeria at at Under-17 and Under-20 level, while he is now a full international, having received his first call-up for the Super Eagles in October 2015.
