Cameroon Winger Christian Bassogog Joins China Bandwagon

Cameroon winger and 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) player of the tournament Christian Bassogog has completed a transfer from Danish club Aab Fodbold to Chinese Super League side Henan Jianye.

The 21-year-old decided to accept a move to China, which is reported to be worth around $8.7 million, according to AfricanFootball, with the new season beginning in early March The fee represents a record transfer for the Danish club.

Bassogog was a key performer for Cameroon at the 2017 AFCON, contributing two important goals and a great deal of hard work from the wing in a successful tournament for the Indomitable Lions, allowing them to lift their fifth AFCON trophy after a 2-1 win over the Pharaohs of Egypt.

The player was voted the AFCON Player of the Tournament by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), sheding light on how important the youngster was to Cameroon’s eventual success, starting each game for the Central Africans.

His impressive performances in Gabon attracted the interest of his new Chinese suitors, and they have moved to solidify a deal that will see him commit his immediate future to the club.

Christian Bassogog follows other Africans to China

Bassogog joins a list of African players who have traded European soccer for the lucrative contracts attracting professionals to the China.

Nigeria captain John Obi Mikel and striker Odion Ighalo recently completed moves to the Chinese Super League from Chelsea and Watford respectively, leaving the English Premier League in order to secure boosted salaries in the newest global soccer frontier.

In bidding farewell to his Danish club, Bassogog thanked the club and the people of Aalborg for their hospitality.

“Since the first day I got here, I received great treatment from everyone both inside and outside the club, and I really felt welcome both in the city of Aalborg and at the club,” Bassogog said, according to the club’s website.

“Now I’ve got an offer I could not refuse, and I look forward to new and exciting experiences in China. I want to thank my team-mates, coaches and the nice people in administration during our time together,” he admitted.

“I must say a big special thanks to the supporters and not least my foster family – they all played a big role in the man I am today,” he added.
