Riding in a 1948 Chevy, we cruise slowly along the main road in Sedgefield, a town on South Africa’s gorgeous Garden Route. Many people just drive through town on their way to Knynsa. Sedgefield is working on getting travelers to slow down and stop. This is Africa’s first and only certified “slow town,” a concept born in Italy’s Slow Town Movement, which took its inspiration from the slow food concept. There are 189 cities in 29 countries that are official slow towns. To qualify for slow town status, Sedgfield must preserve traditional food, control growth, promote a healthy lifestyle and work towards a sustainable future. It doesn’t hurt that the town is in an exquisite setting.  “The people of Sedgefield wholeheartedly embrace the concept,” a tourism stakeholder said. “They love the values and live by them.”
