Napoli Considering Short-Term Didier Drogba Deal

Napoli Considering Short-Term Didier Drogba Deal

Italian Serie A side Napoli are reportedly considering the possibility of signing a short-term deal with Ivorian striker Didier Drogba.

The former Cote D’Ivoire captain is one of the best players ever to have emerged from the African continent, and continues to be a striker of high regard.

The Italians are making up their minds about a move for the former Chelsea attacker after one of their main strikers suffered an injury while on international duty for his country.

Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury during Poland’s 3-2 victory against Denmark at the weekend, and will likely be unavailable for the rest of the current season which ends in June next year.

Milik began his Napoli career in excellent form, scoring goals and assimilating well into the Italian game.

As a result the Partenopei are looking for a replacement who can come into the squad for the rest of the season, filling the gap left in attack.

Didier Drogba has never played for an Italian club

A number of options are being considered, and according to Calciomercato, Drogba’s name has been mentioned as a possibility.

The 38-year-old plies his trade in the American Major Soccer League at the moment, as he is contracted to Montreal Impact, but there may be a possibility for the prolific striker to sign a short-term deal while remaining committed to his MLS club.

The North American top-flight league will come to a close and be on break during the first months of 2017, allowing Drogba to potentially join Napoli on a short-term contract from January. The deal would end at the start of the MLS season.

A similar situation took place twice some years ago when David Beckham joined AC Milan on a short-term contract during the MLS close-season, returning to LA Galaxy after a few months when the MLS restarted.

The proposed deal would be a first for the veteran, as he has never played for an Italian club.

He spent the majority of his long and successful career at English Premier League club Chelsea over two stints. Drogba left the London side at the end of the 2014-15 season, ending his second stint at the London club with total figures of 164 goals in 381 appearances.
