Asamoah Gyan Named In Ghana National Team For World Cup Qualifier

Ghana national team coach Avram Grant selected a 23-man squad that will do duty for the Black Stars in matches against South Africa and Uganda.

The Ghanaians will face Bafana in a friendly encounter on October 11, but will first need to negotiate a World Cup qualifier against the Cranes of Uganda on October 7.

The group stage qualifying campaign for the 2018 World Cup in Russia begins with the encounter against the East Africans, and Ghana will be looking to become one of only five African teams which will qualify for the showpiece event.

These matches will see the return to the squad of two influential players in Jeffrey Schlupp and captain Asamoah Gyan, who were both unavailable for matches against Rwanda and Russia in September on various grounds.

Their presence within the team as potential leaders will be all the more important considering the absence of Andre Ayew and Kwadwo Asamoah of West Ham United and Juventus respectively, as the two veterans of the national team recently suffered injuries.

In attack Jordan Ayew may partner Gyan, but other strikers Abdul Majeed Waris of Lorient, France and David Accam, based at the Chicago Fire in the United States, could also feature.

In the goalkeeping department Adam Kwarasey will likely get the nod ahead of Spain-based Razak Braimah.

Gilbert Koomson of Sogndal and Malmo midfielder Enoch Adu Kofi have been included within the 23, to the surprise of some onlookers.

Ghana take on Uganda this coming Friday, before travelling to South Africa for an international friendly in Durban four days later.
