Italy’s Serie A has long been an attractive league to top quality soccer stars the world over, including some of the best African players.
The 2016-17 season is well under way at this point, with players from the continent determined to make the difference for their teams with quality performances in Italian top-flight league matches.
Here are 12 African players to look out for in the Italian Serie A this season.
The 24-year-old winger is a revelation in Egyptian football, and has done well in the Italian Serie A with excellent performances for Roma. The youngster is composed and plays with experience beyond his years, which has endeared him to Giallorossi fans.
Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu – Udinese
The 25-year-old Ghanaian midfielder continues to do well at Udinese, and he extended his contract with the club this month as reward for his consistency at the Friuli club. His work rate makes him a top performer throughout the season.
Mehdi Benatia – Juventus
The experienced Moroccan defender made the switch from Bayern Munich to Juventus during the European summer, and he will no doubt provide the Bianconeri with a reliable defender capable of threatening in attack from corners and set pieces.
Kalidou Koulibaly – Napoli
Koulibaly recently signed an extension to his Napoli deal, ending speculation of a move away from the club for the moment. The Italians have done well to cement his future at the club, as he is a strong and determined defender that solidifies the backline like few can.
Khouma Babacar – Fiorentina
The powerful Senegalese striker is beginning to show signs of his great potential, and at only 23, he has a long soccer career ahead of him. His pace and athleticism ensure that he troubles opposition defenders and frequently finds space for goal-scoring opportunities.
Kwadwo Asamoah – Juventus
Despite suffering an injury that will keep him out for a few weeks, the combative Ghanaian midfielder will no doubt return to bolster Italian champions Juventus as they attempt to defend their league title.
Joel Obi – Torino
The Nigerian is only 25, and can play an important role for Torino this season. The talented former Inter Milan midfielder has been in Italy since 2005 as a youth team player for the Nerazzurri, and is therefore comfortable with the Italian culture and way of life, which assists his play.
Afriyie Acquah – Torino
The trend of Ghanaians in Italy continues with Acquah, who has earned a reputation as a hard-working midfielder capable of contributing in attack and defence. Having played for Palermo, Parma and Sampdoria in Serie A, he now uses his experience at Torino.
Omar El Kaddouri – Napoli
Formerly on loan with Torino, El Kaddouri’s value was realised by parent club Napoli who brought him back to the club this season. The Moroccan is a talented midfielder capable of breaking down opposition defences, as he regularly shows when representing the Atlas Lions on the international stage.
Umar Sadiq – Bologna
The youngest player on this list at just 19, Nigerian Umar Sadiq has qualities as a striker that make him a handful for defenders. His four goals for Nigeria at the Olympic Games in Rio showed his ability in attack, and he will hope to continue that form on loan to Bologna from Roma.
Serge Gakpe – Genoa
The Togo international striker is on the books of Genoa, having returned to the club on loan from Atalanta. The 29-year-old is a threat up front and if given sufficient game time he will provide the Italians with an added option in attack.
Keita Baldé Diao – Lazio
The 21-year-old Senegalese striker has the potential to do well in the Italian Serie A, and in Lazio he is based at a club in the capital which may value his pace and power up front. He is young, but with enough game time he can show his potential as a striker, having come from the Barcelona youth ranks.
