Another Obama Speech Plagiarized. This Time In Nigeria

Nigeria President Mohammed Buhari has ordered disciplinary action to be taken on those responsible for plagiarizing parts of his ‘Change Begins with Me’ campaign speech from the 2008 victory speech by U.S. President Barack Obama.

The plagiarism scandal is the second to hit Obamas’ famous victory speech of 2008. Melanie Trump, the wife to US presidential hopeful, Donald Trump, admitted to plagiarizing Michelle Obama’s speech to the Democratic National Convention.

Buhari accepted that paragraph nine of the speech that he read two weeks ago was lifted by an overzealous staff of the his press team.

A deputy director in the president’s team admitted to the mistake, Reuters reported.

Buhari launched the ‘Change Begins with Me’ campaign in efforts to entrench accountability, integrity and bring a change in attitude amongst Nigerians, both at home and abroad.

The campaign aims to boost the global image of Africa’s biggest economy, Vanguard reported.

The plagiarism shame came amidst allegations by Akin Fadeyi, former head of communications at Airtel Nigeria, that Buhari’s team stole the idea from his campaign ‘Not in My Country’ in December last year.

Fadeyi said that Lai Mohammed, the minister of Information and Culture, stole the concept from his occasional narrative that used wit to highlight social ills within the Nigerian society and appeal for change from the people, Premium Times reported.

Adeola Akinremi, a columnist with ThisDayLive ridiculed the president for plagiarism on a day that he urged Nigerian to shun vices like dishonesty and corruption that have bedeviled the West African nation, Punch reported.

Buhari’s campaign has been dismissed by some politicians. Ayodele Fayose, the Ekiti State governor said that Buhari was responsible for tainting Nigeria’s image to foreign investors through his acts of nepotism and vindictiveness, Vanguard reported.

Nigeria is one of the most corrupt nations in the world. The economy is in a recession after it experienced negative growth in the first half of the year. Naira, the national currency is struggling against the Dollar, Sahara Reporters reported.

At least 22.4 million Nigerians are unemployed.

The ‘Change Begins with Me’ campaign is similar to another campaign that Buhari started decades ago. In February 1984, Buhari, then a military general at the helm of Africa’s most populous state, led the ‘War against Indiscipline’ campaign.

The initiative was aimed at tackling endemic corruption, mismanagement and everyday trends of indiscipline such as littering the streets and parks, running into buses, cheating and working without commitment.
