Leicester City Engaged In Late Transfer Negotiations For Islam Slimani

English Premier League champions Leicester City are in negotiations with Sporting Lisbon concerning the transfer of Algerian striker Islam Slimani ahead of the close of the transfer window on Wednesday night.

The EPL season is already three matchdays old, and Leicester only managed their first win of the campaign this past weekend when they secured three points against Swansea City in a 2-1 victory at the King Power Stadium on Saturday.

With the additional depth requirements due to their participation in the UEFA Champions League this season, the Foxes are trying to strengthen their attacking options before the window closes this week.

Slimani enjoyed a fantastic season in the Portuguese top flight during 2015-16, scoring at will and providing his side with a reliable target-man with proven pedigree.

The talented attacker scored 27 goals the Portuguese Primeira Liga campaign, and this has been noticed by Leicester coach Claudio Ranieri.

Islam Slimani focused despite negotiations

The Guardian reports that Leicester’s initial offer of $32.7 million for the player was rejected, as Sporting is expected to be looking for a bid that comes closer to their $44.5 million valuation.

Despite the ongoing talks surrounding a potential transfer, Slimani continues to contribute excellent performances for his Portuguese club, with a 2-1 victory over bitter rivals Porto on Sunday night coming in part from the Algeria’s boot, as he scored his side’s opening goal.

The 28-year-old Algeria international is rumoured to be very interested in a move to the English top-flight, and with the champions calling, a deal could be done before Wednesday night’s deadline.

Ranieri relied heavily on the exploits of Slimani’s compatriot Riyad Mahrez last term in winning the EPL title.

A partnership between the two, or with other star striker Jamie Vardy, could be exactly what the club needs to increase their firepower ahead of a very busy season in which they are attempting to defend their league title while taking part in the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup.
