Acumen Readying For 2014 East Africa Fellows Program

Nonprofit global venture firm Acumen, whose goal is to address poverty across Africa and South Asia, is recruiting leaders for the 2014 East Africa Fellows Program.

The East Africa Fellows Program is a year-long leadership  development program. It focuses on developing the next generation of social change leaders, who will drive  innovative social change models to fight poverty across Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and South Sudan.

In East Africa, Acumen has invested $30.8M in innovations, impacted 81.7 million people, created and supported 44,000 jobs that have improved livelihoods and economies, reports Celebrating Progress Africa.

Each year, the program selects 20 East Africans who are actively driving social change initiatives in their communities and in the last two years, the program has developed nearly 40 individuals.

“The program strives to develop a cohort of moral leaders who are setting a different example for a new kind of leadership in East Africa. These individuals have the moral fiber and courage to challenge broken systems so real progress can take place,”  Duncan Onyango, Acumen East Africa Director, told CP-Africa.

Among the current fellows is Josephine Kulea,  founder of Samburu Girls Foundation in Northern Kenya which rescues young girls from harmful cultural practices like forced marriage and female genital mutilation. Her foundation has rescued 1,000 girls and placed them into primary and secondary schools.

The application deadline is September 2, 2013.
