An EgyptAir flight from Paris carrying 66 passengers and crew crashed off the Greek Mediterranean Island of Karpathos after disappearing from radar at about 0030 GMT, French President Francois Hollande has confirmed.

Associated Press reported that flight MS804 was flying at an altitude of nearly 37,000 feet before it disappeared from radar 10 miles inside Egyptian airspace, above the Mediterranean Sea and some 175 miles from the Egyptian coastline.

The Airbus A320 was carrying 56 passengers, seven crew members and three security personnel.

EgyptAir said the 56 passengers included 30 Egyptians, 15 French, two Iraqis and one each from Britain, Sudan, Chad, Portugal, Algeria, Canada, Belgium, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, Associated Press reported.

EgyptAir flight from Paris sends emergency signal

The airline said the plane sent an emergency signal — possibly from an emergency beacon attached to the plane — two hours after it disappeared from radar screens.

A Greek defense ministry source said authorities were also investigating an account from the captain of a merchant ship who reported a “flame in the sky” around 130 nautical miles south of the island of Karpathos, RTE News reported.
