Atletico Madrid Earn Champions League Final Ticket

Atletico Madrid managed to score a priceless away goal against Bayern Munich in Tuesday night’s UEFA Champions League semi-final, converting a 2-1 loss at the Allianz Arena into an aggregate 2-2 draw with the away goal sending the Spaniards on to the final of the competition.

A 1-0 victory for Atletico Madrid in the first leg at the Calderon meant that the Germans would need to come on fighting at home, and they did so, pushing forward with determination.

The pressure from Bayern allowed the Germans to open the scoring in the second leg, levelling the tie with a deflected Xabi Alonso free-kick in the 31st minute.

The home side could have scored their second in the first half, but Atletico keeper Jan Oblak did well to save Thomas Muller’s penalty, with half time showing a match tied on aggregate.

The second half saw a more aggressive Spanish club on the counter attack, and star player Antoine Griezmann came up with the goods once again, scoring his seventh goal of the Champions League campaign with a great finish in the 54th minute.

Robert Lewandowski was his usual menacing self, and in the 74th minute his header let Bayern take the lead on the night, but it was not enough to overturn the away goal that Griezmann had scored.

It did ensure a nervy finish to the match, as Fernando Torres wasted a chance to put the match beyond the Germans as he missed a penalty.

Atletico Madrid set to face Real or Man City

Europe’s flagship club competition will see the final take place in Milan on May 28, with Atletico set to meet the winner from the other semi-final between Real Madrid and Manchester City, which is set for Wednesday.

That means that the possibility remains of a Madrid Derby in the final of the Champions League, with Cristiano Ronaldo’s Real Madrid needing to win at home against the Citizens to earn their place in the final, after a goalless first leg draw in Manchester
