Egyptian international Mohamed Elneny has called for his Arsnal team-mates to refocus their efforts on their push for the English Premier League title, following their loss to Barcelona on Wednesday night which saw them crash out of the UEFA Champions League.

The 23-year-old midfielder was on target with a wonderful strike against the Spanish club, but his goal would prove to be the only positive for the Gunners in a 5-1 aggregate defeat to the Catalans at the last 16 stage.

Elneny’s goal against the Blaugrana made him only the fifth African player to score against Barcelona, and the third Egypt international to score in the Champions League.

Speaking after Wednesday night’s second leg 3-1 defeat at the Camp Nou, the midfielder explained that his team did the best that they could against a side of Barcelona’s calibre.

“We did what we could today. Sure, we lost, but we tried our best. We were playing against a big team,” Elneny said to the media after the game, according to Arsenal’s official website.

The North London club are third on the EPL table with 52 points from 29 matches, and Elneny wants his side to focus on the English top flight title, which he believes is still within reach.

“We’re still up for the league. We need to focus. We still have nine games to go and God willing we can do it,” he said.

“We know it’s a big stadium and a great stadium too but I’m happy with my performance today, but not that happy about the result. I knew it’d be hard, but there is no ‘hard’ in football,” added the new Arsenal signing.

Arsenal’s next Premier League game is against Everton on Saturday.
